Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae (SciENcv) is an electronic system that helps researchers assemble the professional information needed for participation in federally funded research. NSF will require senior personnel documents (Current and Pending Support and Biographical Sketch) to be generated via SciENcv beginning October 23, 2023.
What SciENcv Does
- Eliminates the need to repeatedly enter biosketch and current and pending (C&P) information, reducing the administrative burden associated with federal grant submission and reporting requirements.
- Provides access to a researcher-claimed data repository with information on expertise, employment, education, and professional accomplishments.
- Allows researchers to describe their scientific contributions in their own language.
- Allows PIs to assign other users, such as a grant manager, as a delegate.
When is SciENcv Required

**Adobe Sign is a Duke-specific requirement for NIH OS (Other Support) documents
Setting up Delegates
Delegates will have access to assist PIs with SciENcv document preparation. They will not, however, be able to download the completed form for the PI, as there is a certification that needs to take place that can only be completed by the PI. Once the PI certifies the document, the PI or delegate can download the certified form for use on proposal submissions or sponsor reports.
How to Assign a Delegate:
- Log in to your My NCBI Account
- Select your username in the top-right corner of the screen to access the Account Settings page.
- Under “Delegates,” select “Add a delegate”.
- Enter your delegate’s email address (your grant manager’s email address) and select “OK”.
Creating an NSF Biosketch
- On the My NCBI main page, scroll to the bottom right corner to find the SciENcv widget.
- If you have not used SciENcv before, you will see a small box with a link “Click here to create a new CV”. Click this link to create the document.
- If you have used SciENcv before, you will see links to view/edit the existing SciENcv documents. To create a new document, click the “Manage SciENcv” link and then click “+ Create New Document” on the following page.
- Fill out the form:
-
- Enter a document name.
- Select the type of document (NSF Biographical Sketch
- Choose the data source.
- Start with a blank document if this is your first SciENcv biosketch.
- Start with an existing document if you are creating an alternate version for a specific proposal.
- Click “Create”.
- Complete the “Identifying Information, Organization and Location” Section.
-
- Click the “Add Information” button to open the form and complete the required fields.
- Complete Section A “Professional Preparation”.
- Click the “Add Professional Preparation” button to open the pop-up window and complete the required fields.
- Complete Section B “Appointments and Positions”.
-
- Click the “Add Appointment/Position” button to open the pop-up window and complete the required fields.
- Complete Section C “Products”.
- Select the “Products Most Closely Related to the Proposed Project” and “Other Significant Products, Whether or Not Related to the Proposed Project”.
- Add up to 5 products to each sub-section.
- Citations listed in your NCBI bibliography or citations associated with your ORCID should be available to add.
- If the citations are not listed, please add them to your NCBI bibliography (via PubMed search or manually).
- Select the “Products Most Closely Related to the Proposed Project” and “Other Significant Products, Whether or Not Related to the Proposed Project”.
- Complete Section D “Synergistic Activities”.
-
- Click the “Add Activities” button to begin adding your synergistic activities. This will open a text box for your first activity. Click save when finished.
- You can add up to 5 synergistic activities. Click the “+ Add Another Synergistic Activity” button to repeat the entry process.
- Certify and Download
-
- Once you have completed the required sections, you can certify and download the document by clicking the “Download PDF” button. If the “Download PDF” button is not blue/clickable, you are likely missing a required field in one of the sections.
- This will open a certification statement. Please review and click the “Certify” button. The PDF download will begin immediately
Reviewing and Certifying NSF Current and Pending Support
Your grant manager will prepare your NSF Current and Pending Support document and will notify you when the document is ready for your review and certification. Please follow the steps below:
- Login to the My NCBI main page and find the appropriate CPS document within the SciENcv widget. Access the CPS document by clicking the link in the “Name” column.
- Once you are on the SciENcv CPS page, click the “View Draft” button to open the draft version of the CPS document (PDF format).
- Review the document for accuracy. Notify your grant manager if you have any questions or concerns.
- Once you have reviewed and are satisfied with the CPS, please certify and download the document by clicking the “Download PDF” button. This will open a certification statement. Please review the statement and click the “Certify” button. The PDF download will then begin.
